Gilmer at Center: The 28-Point Receipt Is Due Thursday

A short week, no Yamboree, no home crowd, 1-1 in district, and the specific number we put in writing after Friday — all of it comes to Roughrider Stadium at 6:30 Thursday.

Gilmer at Center: The 28-Point Receipt Is Due Thursday Previews

The gist

  • Gilmer (5-2, 1-1 district) at Center, Thursday Oct. 22, 6:30 PM at Roughrider Stadium — the game was moved off Friday because of the officials shortage, per the Gilmer Mirror.
  • Last Friday's recap put a number in writing: if Gilmer allows more than 28 points at Center, the defense is the season's story, not a concern. 284 points allowed over seven games is 40.6 a night.
  • Short week, road, no Yamboree, no home crowd — the sideline distractions that bit this program last Friday are not available Thursday.
  • We like Gilmer to answer the mail. Buckeyes 38, Center 24.

The receipt we handed ourselves

Last Friday we lost 58-56 at Jeff Traylor Stadium to a 3-3 Pittsburg team after leading 21-6. We closed the recap with a specific number so we could not wiggle out of it in writing. 28. If Gilmer allows more than 28 points at Center, we said we would stop calling the defense a concern and start calling it the actual story of this season. The receipt comes due Thursday night, in print, before any of us know how the game ends.

Here is why the number matters, and why 28 is not an impossible one even against a district opponent on the road. Points allowed by game: Pine Tree 52, Chapel Hill 31, Kilgore 50, Sulphur Springs 38, Sunnyvale 28, Pleasant Grove 27, Pittsburg 58. Three nights of fifty-plus in seven tries. That is not an outlier anymore; that is a pattern. The cumulative is 284 points over seven games — 40.6 a night — and that is the number that belongs at the top of a preview, not buried on the way to a prediction.

And the proof it can be done sits two games back. Pleasant Grove, the best offense on this schedule, scored 27 at Jeff Traylor Stadium on Oct. 9 (we wrote about it). The defense that showed up for sixty minutes against the Hawks is the one the 28-point marker is grading. Nobody is asking this group to invent something new. They are being asked to be the version of themselves that was already on film ten days ago.

The second piece of the receipt was the kick coverage. Pittsburg recovered two onside kicks in the fourth quarter; penalties took one away and the officials took the other. Either way, the lesson the staff could take home was the same: kick deep and cover. If Thursday looks like short kicks and prayers again, that is a decision somebody at the top of the sideline is making after being handed the room to stop making it. We said we would say so, and we will.

The matchup

Gilmer at Center, Thursday Oct. 22, 2026, 6:30 PM at Roughrider Stadium, 658 Roughrider Dr. in Center, TX. District 8-4A Division II game. Per the Gilmer Mirror, the game was moved off its original Friday Oct. 23 slot because of a statewide officials shortage — MaxPreps still listed Friday as of this writing, so trust the school. Short week, Thursday night, on the road.

Gilmer walks in 5-2 overall after Friday's 58-56 home loss to Pittsburg, and 1-1 in district after beating Pleasant Grove 33-27 and losing to the Pirates. That leaves three district games on the board: Center on Thursday, Carthage at home on Oct. 30, and at Spring Hill on Nov. 6. The playoff math is still right there — it is just no longer a given.

This is game eight of the year and road game four for the Buckeyes. Gilmer is 3-1 at Jeff Traylor Stadium so far this fall, and the three road wins came at Chapel Hill, Sulphur Springs, and — well, we did not get the Pine Tree one, but we scored 40 trying. Everything after this game is district. Everything after this game starts to feel like playoffs that have not been scheduled yet.

Around the barbecue

Credit where it is due: Gilmer fans on smoaky were on last Friday before any of us were. The Pittsburg game thread opened with the words "this could be a trap game" and listed every reason it would be — coming off an emotional high against Pleasant Grove, Yamboree week, snap problems at center, Pittsburg has athletes who played the whole game both ways. All of it showed up on the film. The same posters who gave Gilmer three touchdowns at kickoff were the ones who put the trap flag out in the first paragraph; we picked Gilmer by multiple scores anyway. That one is on the writer, not the message board.

What is noisier on the forum this week is already Carthage — a program that has beaten Pleasant Grove nine straight times and gets Gilmer at home a week from Friday. Nobody on smoaky is sleeping on Center the way the Pittsburg thread accidentally slept on the Pirates. The read on the board is that this is a short-week pride game for a defense that has to show up, and that if it does not, there are no more alibis for a group that has surrendered fifty-plus three times already in East Texas 4A.

Key to the game: Kick deep. Cover. Keep the opponent's starting field position inside their own 30. The Pittsburg game turned on where the offense had to go to work, not on how good the offense was.

Our take

Three honest reads before kickoff:

  • The 28-point number is the only thing that matters, because it is the only thing we put in writing. If Center hangs 29 Thursday, the defense is the season — not a concern, not a worry, the actual story. Say it before, grade it after.
  • Short weeks on the road are where good football programs show you what they really are. We think this is one. There is no sideshow to lose this one to.
  • The pick: Gilmer 38, Center 24. The 28-point marker holds, the Monday problem gets quieter but not fixed, and the real test comes home Oct. 30 against Carthage.

28 points. We said it in writing. If Center hangs a 30-piece, the defense isn't a concern anymore — it's the season.

Falsifiable marker for next week, since we are keeping the receipts honest: if Gilmer is not within two scores of Carthage at Jeff Traylor Stadium on Oct. 30, the district-title conversation is over, regardless of what Thursday looks like. Specific number, in writing, graded next Saturday morning.

Thursday night in Center. Short week, no Yamboree, no home crowd, a number already handed to us by last Friday. If you'd rather put your reads where your mouth is than argue them at a game thread, hop in and make your picks — this one is one of them.
