The wait is over. East Texas high school football is back Friday night, and the Gilmer Buckeyes get the season started the way they seem to like it best: on the road, in front of a hostile crowd, with everybody still guessing what this team really is.
The matchup
Gilmer at Pine Tree, Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, in Longview. That's it. That's the fact sheet. Everything else you're going to read this week — ours included — is projection, vibes, and the kind of confident guessing that makes August fun.
Here's what we do know matters. Gilmer is Class 4A Division II, Region II, District 8, and the schedule doesn't get soft after this. Chapel Hill on the road next week, Kilgore at home, Sulphur Springs, Sunnyvale, and then the district gauntlet opens Oct. 10 with Pleasant Grove, followed by Pittsburg, Center, Carthage, and Spring Hill to close it out. Every one of those October and November games is going to feel like a playoff seeding meeting.
That's why Week 1 at a Longview-market opponent is useful even if the scoreboard doesn't cooperate. You want to see how the offensive line holds up against real size. You want to see whether the quarterback situation looks settled by the second series. You want to see who's getting the ball in space. You want a coach who can adjust at halftime without setting anything on fire. Pine Tree, in Pine Tree, will make you show all of it.
Key to the game: the first six offensive snaps. Preseason chatter is one thing — the first drive of a real game is where an East Texas team's identity actually shows up.
Around the barbecue
Gilmer fans on smoaky already have a Pine Tree thread going, and if you scroll the East Texas boards this week you'll see the usual Week 1 rhythm: the Carthage–Henderson conversation, live score updates spinning up, and the traditional "where are the Carthage posters?" bat-signal. The Buckeyes are not flying under the radar in East Texas — they never really do.
We're not going to republish any of that. Read it at the source, take it with the grain of salt any message board deserves, and remember: nobody who posts in August has seen a real snap yet either.
Our take
Three things we believe going in.
One. This is the exact right kind of Week 1. A road game against a bigger-market opponent will expose more than a home cupcake ever would — and it's still a non-district opener, so exposure without a district loss on the ledger is a bargain.
Two. Whoever wins the trenches wins this game. That's how it always goes in August. Conditioning, cohesion, and pad level beat playbook every time in the first week — and Gilmer historically shows up in shape.
Three. Don't overreact to the scoreboard. Anybody who tries to declare the 4A Division II playoff picture on Aug. 29 is selling something.
Gilmer takes it on the road, but the more useful stat by Saturday morning isn't the final — it's how the Buckeyes looked in the second half.
Give us Gilmer, on the road, in a game that's closer and more physical than the fans on either side want. The Buckeyes have been through this act plenty of times.
