The matchup
Gilmer at Pine Tree. Friday, August 28, 2026. Pine Tree's house, in the Longview metro just east of Tyler. It's the Buckeyes' first real game of the season and it's already a real one — Pine Tree plays up a classification, and the drive south out of Upshur County into 5A territory isn't a “shake off the cobwebs” kind of trip.
The honest thing about a season opener: nobody knows what anybody looks like yet. Not the coaches, not the fans, not us. There's no 2026 tape. There's camp reports and hope and a whole lot of preseason opinions. A Gilmer team in orange stepping onto a hostile East Texas high school football field in August has a long enough track record that we're going to lean on the résumé more than any preseason chatter.
The stakes here aren't scoreboard — they're rhythm. Get out of this one healthy, get out of it with a rushing identity, and the road through Chapel Hill, Kilgore, Sulphur Springs, and eventually Pittsburg and Carthage looks a whole lot friendlier. Texas 4A football is won in October and November, but it's shaped in Week 1. Ask any Upshur County dad standing at the tailgate.
Our take
Three quick ones.
One: The travel doesn't scare us. Gilmer plays East Texas high school football on the road every fall and the program is built for it. Pine Tree's home crowd is loud early — and quiet by the fourth quarter if the Buckeye offensive line does its job.
Two: The classification gap is not the gap. Pine Tree lines up in 5A. Fine. Records and roster sizes matter less on a Friday night in East Texas than pad level, tackling angles, and who gets to Saturday-morning film feeling proud of the tape.
Three: Whoever ends up as the guy in the Buckeye backfield needs 20 touches or this thing gets weird. We'd rather see one hammer take the load than a committee try to figure it out in a Week 1 road game.
Gilmer wins this one in the fourth quarter. The scoreboard says single digits, the film says it wasn't close.
Our pick: Gilmer. Not a blowout, not a comeback — a game the Buckeyes control from about the third snap of the second quarter forward. Bank it, tell your neighbor, then meet us back here Saturday to compare notes.
One more note for anybody following the program's story arc: Tyler Hagler leaving Gilmer for Emporia State was one of the more notable East Texas HS-to-college moves this cycle (we wrote it up here), and the pipeline keeps humming. That's what a healthy Buckeye program looks like, and it's the reason we keep giving Gilmer the benefit of the doubt on a Week 1 road trip.
