What happened
A week after burying UTEP 51-0 in the home opener, Oklahoma took the first road trip of 2026 up to Ann Arbor and got the answers no one wanted. Michigan 17, Oklahoma 10. The Sooners were in it until the last seven minutes. They just were not sharper.
Bryce Underwood broke it open early with a 38-yard scramble touchdown at 0:47 in the first, and a Trey Butkowski 40-yarder made it 10-0 at the half. Oklahoma got a heartbeat in the third when John Mateer hit Mackenzie Alleyne for a 22-yard score, and a Tate Sandell 34-yard field goal tied it 10-10 with 11:49 left in the fourth. Then Jordan Marshall punched in a one-yard run with 7:53 to play, and Michigan closed it out.
Mateer went 17-of-33 for 189 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and added 13 carries for 45 more on the ground — he WAS the offense. Rocky Beers went for 94 on six catches, most of the passing game. On the other side of the ball, Owen Heinecke led the defense with 10 tackles and a sack, and helped hold Underwood to 9-of-17 for 111 yards passing on a night the Wolverines wanted their quarterback throwing.

Read the top of the sheet and you would swear Oklahoma won this game: 26 more total yards, 78 more through the air, three more first downs. Read the bottom of the sheet and the game makes sense. Two giveaways to zero. Three-of-thirteen on third down. Michigan owning the clock 33:17 to 26:43. Two teams played efficient football on Saturday. One of them was in white.
The talking point
The box score did the talking this week. Oklahoma out-gained Michigan on the road and lost by seven — the turnover column and the third-down column don't need a color analyst to explain them.
Our take
The homer read on this one is easy and also wrong: "we beat them everywhere it didn't count." The honest read is that the defense actually showed up in Ann Arbor. Nine-of-seventeen and 111 passing yards from Bryce Underwood is a night the Michigan staff will study on the flight home. Heinecke was everywhere. Two games in, Oklahoma has surrendered 17 points TOTAL. That defense is real.
The offense is the problem, and it is a specific problem. Three-of-thirteen on third down means the drives died. Two turnovers on the road against a top program means one of them is a two-score swing you don't get back. Mateer is going to have to be sharper than 17-of-33; a 51% clip with a pick will not move the chains in October.
Last week answered the easy questions. This one asked the hard one, and the answer was “not yet.”
Hot take: this loss does not scare us. A 51-0 dismantling of UTEP and a competitive road loss at Michigan is a defensible two-week resume, and 61 points scored against 17 allowed is a defense-first identity we will happily take into the Big 12 schedule. Cold take: if Oklahoma does not crack 40% on third down against New Mexico, this identity gets tested a lot earlier than we would like. Put that one on the board — we will grade it next week.
Next up
Back home to Norman on Sept. 19 for the New Mexico Lobos. The Lobos come to Owen Field with the Michigan tape to study, and they will bet Oklahoma's third-down offense does not clean itself up in a week. Prove them wrong on the first drive.
