Fall camp opens this week in the Kansas Flint Hills, and among the new faces on the Emporia State defensive line is a freshman who's been up there grinding all summer, learning the standard before the pads ever came on. Every so often a recruiting story doesn't run in a straight line — and ends up better for it. Meet Tyler Hagler.
Out of Gilmer, deep in East Texas, Hagler made his name early. As a sophomore he anchored the defensive front for the 2023 Class 4A Division II state champions, the Buckeye team that edged Bellville 28-26 for the title. Sophomores don't usually start on state-title defenses — he did, and earned District 7-4A Defensive Newcomer of the Year and a TSWA 4A D-II second-team all-state nod for it.
Then he kept building. As a junior in 2024: 103 tackles, 10 for loss, two sacks, an interception, and 17 quarterback hurries. By the end of his prep career the Gilmer ledger read like a four-year wrecking ball — 256 career tackles, 31 tackles for loss, six sacks, 59 QB hurries, an interception, and eight blocked field goals — plus three All-District selections. He also throws the shot put past 46 feet, because a 6-foot, 355-pound lineman who moves like that isn't just strong. He's an athlete.
Recruiting rarely goes to script
The Division I interest was real — a 247Sports composite prospect at 0.83, with looks from Houston, Texas Tech, UTSA, UTEP, and Stephen F. Austin. But recruiting is fickle, and timing is everything. Gilmer had set an absurd standard in the years Hagler grew up inside it — 13-2, 11-1, a 12-3 state title, then 8-4 — and his senior season simply didn't follow the same script the program was used to. That's how it goes more often than the highlight tapes admit: staffs turn over, priorities shift, an offer that felt solid in the spring can quietly cool by winter. None of that changed who Hagler is on the field. It just changed the address.
Following footsteps — and forging his own
That address is Emporia State University — D-II, MIAA, in the Kansas Flint Hills — and it fits him for reasons that go well beyond a depth chart.
Hagler is walking a road his family already helped pave. His brother, Dakota Hagler, landed in Emporia as a true freshman in 2009 — and watched the Hornets go 2-9, more losses in a single fall than he'd tasted in his entire career coming up through Gilmer's winning culture. He knew it had to change. It did. Four years later the program had flipped completely: a 10-2 record and an NCAA playoff berth in 2012, its first 10-win season in over 20 years and the foundation everything good since has been built on. Dakota was one of the best interior defensive linemen of that turnaround — stats don't lie — and one of the guys who put Emporia State football back on the map. By the time he left, he'd racked up 107 career tackles — one of the most productive interior linemen of the program's modern era.
Now his little brother is walking through the same door — but make no mistake, Tyler isn't there to be anyone's little brother. Same jersey, brand-new name on the back of it. He's chasing his own chapter, and he's got his sights set high: be part of the next big push, the kind that doesn't stop until there's a ring at the end of it.
And Emporia State is a real place to chase that. The MIAA is some of the best defensive-line football in all of Division II — exactly the proving ground where a high-motor, state-champion freshman turns summer reps into Saturday production.
And consider this the warning label for the rest of the MIAA: Tyler's high-school stat sheet already reads bigger than his big brother's did in college — more tackles, more TFLs, the whole line. If that's the floor, Hornet fans can only imagine the ceiling.
