The gist
- Pittsburg at Gilmer, Friday October 16, 7:00 p.m. at Jeff Traylor Stadium — district game two.
- We’re 5-1 off a 33-27 district win over Pleasant Grove, with back-to-back opponents held under 30 for the first time this season.
- The number we left you last week: hold Pittsburg to 20 or fewer and we are three straight under 30, with the season points-allowed line finally starting to move.
- Our lean: Gilmer by three touchdowns. But Yamboree-week trap talk is on the forum, the center spot is still a question, and we are not writing a victory lap until we see twenty on the scoreboard across from us.
The twenty we promised you
We closed last Friday’s recap with a specific, gradeable claim. Hold Pittsburg to 20 or fewer and we are three in a row under 30, the season number falls, and we stop putting a qualifier in front of the word defense. Allow forty and we take back the back-to-back sentence and go write it over. That marker is still on the table, and this is what the number actually buys.
Through six games the Buckeyes have surrendered 226 points, 37.7 a night. Hold Pittsburg to 20 and the season average drops to roughly 35. Hold them under 30 and it is still over 36, but the streak lives. Those are not the same thing — one preserves the sentence we just wrote, the other starts moving the sentence we have been writing all year.
Trap-game talk, a backup center who finished the Pleasant Grove game after our starter went down on the opening possession, a Pittsburg quarterback who is also their starting safety — every one is a reason the twenty might slip. None is a reason to lower the marker. We set it. It stands.
The matchup
Gilmer (5-1) hosts Pittsburg at Jeff Traylor Stadium at 7:00 p.m. Friday — district game two in Class 4A Division II, Region II, District 8, after beating Pleasant Grove 33-27 at home last week. The Buckeyes are 3-0 at home in 2026 and have won four in a row inside this stadium going back to late last season.
Three district games remain after this one — Center on the road October 23, Carthage here October 30, Spring Hill in Longview to close November 6. The last district title in Gilmer, per the program history page at smoaky, was 2022. We have not forgotten.
Around the barbecue
Gilmer fans on smoaky are picking us and nervous about it in the same post. The word on the game thread is trap game — Yamboree week, an emotional high off the Pleasant Grove win, a Pittsburg team that has athletic dudes playing both ways. One poster said flat out the Buckeyes need the center spot settled fast after high snaps cost drives last week; the counter is that the backup held up fine once he got in and will clean it up with a full week of first-team reps.
The Pittsburg side on the same thread is honest about its ceiling. Their quarterback is back from injury but is also their starting safety, and more than one of their star players is on the field for every snap. Both fan bases land the same way: Pittsburg gives Gilmer a fight for a quarter or two, gets leaned on by a big back pounding a defense that cannot sub, and the fourth quarter goes where it usually goes. The nicest sentence anyone wrote came from a Pittsburg-adjacent poster calling our quarterback the kind of elusive runner you cannot stand watching from the wrong sideline.
The streak is cheap. The season number is the one that matters, and the only way to move it is to put a game on the pile with a two in front of it.
Our take
Three takes. First, the trap-game anxiety is beside the point. A Gilmer team that would get flat on Yamboree Friday is a team that was going to lose a district game somewhere anyway, and the point of this stream is to stop softening those sentences. Second, the center position is the one piece of information this game owes us: fix held, you see it on second and short; fix didn’t, you see it on first and long and we have another thing to be honest about Saturday morning. Third — and this is where we take a position — the way to beat Pittsburg is on the ground. Pound a defense whose best bodies cannot come off the field, and the fourth quarter does the rest.
Prediction: Gilmer 42, Pittsburg 20. On the number. The streak lives, the season line finally moves, and the receipt we wrote last week gets stamped PAID. Allow 30 and we are back to qualifying the defense in the gist. Allow 40 and the back-to-back sentence comes down.
Key to the game: second-and-short. If the center spot is settled, Gilmer will churn out short-yardage conversions and run clock on a Pittsburg defense that cannot sub. If it isn’t, every drive turns into third-and-long and we are watching a Yamboree-week dogfight that nobody around here wants.
Falsifiable marker for the recap: Pittsburg points allowed, on the scoreboard, Friday night. Twenty or fewer and this preview ages well. Thirty or more and we eat it in paragraph four, like we did after Kilgore. Either way, if you’d rather back your read than argue it at the fence line, that is literally what the pick’em sheet is for.
