Gilmer vs. Pleasant Grove: The Receipt From Sunnyvale Is Due Previews

The gist

  • Pleasant Grove at Gilmer, Friday, Oct. 9, 7:00 p.m. at Jeff Traylor Stadium — the District 8-4A-II opener and the first Buckeyes game where the opponent's defense is the unit everyone trusts more than ours.
  • Gilmer is 4-1, averaging 51 points a night, allowing 39.8. The defense trimmed the bleeding over the last two games (59 points surrendered after 88 the two before) but has given up at least 28 to every opponent on the schedule.
  • The receipt from our Sunnyvale rewind is due. Two first-half full-drive stops, Gilmer wins. Zero, 49 points a game won't save us. Our pick: Gilmer gets one, and that is the problem.

The two-stops test

During the bye week we handed this audience a falsifiable marker. In writing. If the Buckeye defense generates two full-drive stops in the first half against Pleasant Grove, Gilmer wins the district opener. Not should. Will. Zero stops, no amount of fifty-point offense gets it done. That claim lives or dies Friday night.

Here is why we drew the line there. Through five games Gilmer has allowed 52, 31, 50, 38, and 28 — 199 points, 39.8 a night, against five non-district opponents, none of whom anybody mistook for Pleasant Grove. The Hawks are the first team on the schedule whose defense walks into Jeff Traylor Stadium ranked ahead of ours by every neutral set of eyes in East Texas. If the offense has to pour forty-nine every Friday to buy a win, this is the week the formula finally shows its edges.

The home history makes the stakes clearer, not softer. Pleasant Grove came to Gilmer last October and won 41-7. In 2023 they came to Gilmer and won 63-28. In 2020 Gilmer took them 31-28 at home. That is one Buckeye win in the last three Hawk visits to this stadium — and the two losses were not close calls, they were nights where the scoreboard read like a mistake. The current 3-game home win streak is real. So is what it is measured against: a program with four state titles (2004, 2009, 2014, 2023) that still has not solved Pleasant Grove in a decade. Program numbers via smoaky's historical records.

The matchup

Pleasant Grove at Gilmer, Friday, Oct. 9, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. at Jeff Traylor Stadium in Gilmer. District 8-4A-II opener. Gilmer sits 4-1 coming off last week's bye; the last time out was a 49-28 home win over Sunnyvale on Sept. 25. The non-district stretch finished with four straight wins: Chapel Hill 54-31, Kilgore 64-50, Sulphur Springs 48-38, Sunnyvale 49-28. The only loss was the opener at Pine Tree, 52-40.

From here forward every game is a district game that counts toward playoff seeding. Pittsburg comes to town the following Friday, then road trips to Center and Spring Hill flank a home game with Carthage. Win Friday and the Buckeyes are the team the rest of District 8-4A-II is chasing. Lose and it is a four-week scramble to be the team doing the chasing.

Around the barbecue

Gilmer fans on smoaky's game thread are calling it a pick'em, which from this corner of East Texas is as honest as the board gets about a Gilmer home game. The through-line is the one honest Buckeye supporter won't dodge: Pleasant Grove's defense is better than ours and the night tilts on whoever makes fewer mistakes. One Hawks fan put it bluntly — the PG defense is just better than the Bux defense. The Buckeye side of the thread didn't argue the point. That is the tell.

The companion thread has turned into a group confession about the other side of the ball. A Buckeye regular framed it as “hold us under fifty and you have a real good shot at beating us.” That is a joke with teeth, and it is also exactly the sentence a Pleasant Grove assistant would want tacked on a bulletin board. The hard conversation nobody on either board is dodging — and we are not going to dodge it either — is whether this defense is a game plan that will adjust or a personnel ceiling that was baked in during August. Pleasant Grove is the Friday the answer stops being theoretical.

Our take

Three things we will say now that the room may not.

One. The open date was spent on the defense, or it was wasted. Pleasant Grove will not help us by snapping the ball out of the end zone or missing a wide-open seam the way Sunnyvale did. If the game plan Friday is the same game plan that let a 0-2 Kilgore team hang fifty, this is a two-score loss by halftime.

Two. The home record is real, and the home record is also three games old. Jeff Traylor Stadium has not been a place Pleasant Grove loses in a long time. Treating a three-game home win streak as evidence we have fixed what 2025 broke is a dangerous read until Pleasant Grove is the opponent that leaves.

Three — the hot take. We think Gilmer gets one first-half stop, not two. We also think the offense covers the gap one time and not twice. That lands us at Pleasant Grove 38, Gilmer 34, with a late Buckeye drive that stalls near the goal line. If we are wrong in the direction of two stops, we go home 31-21 and the district is ours to lose. If we are wrong the other direction, it is 48-20 and we have to re-litigate the whole season on Saturday morning.

The preview said two first-half stops. Pleasant Grove is the night that number stops being hypothetical.

Key to the game. First Pleasant Grove drive. If the Hawks score, every number on our end has to be perfect the rest of the night. If we punt them, every number on their end has to be perfect. The first drive carries most of the win probability for this one.

Falsifiable marker, carried forward one more Friday: two first-half full-drive stops, Gilmer wins. One stop, we lose a close one. Zero, we are the preseason team again by Saturday morning. If you'd rather back your read than just shout it, that is literally the game — make your picks before kickoff.
