The recap
Grind. That’s the word for it. Oklahoma beat New Mexico 14-6 on Saturday in Norman to move to 2-1, and if you watched only the scoreboard you saw a defensive shutdown on a home Saturday. If you watched the whole thing, you saw the second week in a row where the Sooner offense couldn’t get out of its own way.
John Mateer finished 19-of-25 for 238 yards and both Oklahoma touchdowns — a 29-yard strike to Hayden Hansen with 13:49 left in the second quarter, then a 53-yard scoring throw to Isaiah Sategna III with 8:05 left in the third. Sategna finished with 6 catches for 101 yards, the one player on the field who looked like a difference-maker. He was also, effectively, half the offense.
The other half of the story is uglier. Three turnovers, including a pair of Mateer interceptions. Sixty-one rushing yards on the day, with Lloyd Avant’s 27 leading the way. New Mexico held the ball for 34:08 to Oklahoma’s 25:52. On the possession chart, this was the Lobos’ game. The scoreboard doesn’t care, but the tape will.
Defensively there is real work to celebrate. Adepoju Adebawore added 1.5 sacks, David Stone led with 8 tackles, and the front held New Mexico to 185 total yards and a pair of Grant Glasgow field goals. Holding an opponent to two field goals in your own stadium is a win regardless of the noise. But last week we published “The Hard Question Answered ‘Not Yet’”, a piece that asked whether this team was ready to be counted with the elites and answered 17-10 on the road. A week later the answer isn’t any better. It’s a different question now: can the offense that stalled in Ann Arbor find itself before Athens?

Our take
Here’s our read: winning by eight over New Mexico at home is fine as a result and worrying as a preview. The defense is real — 23 points allowed across three games is genuine work — but the Sooners’ ceiling right now is capped by an offense that has scored 24 combined points across its last two games against a real defense (Michigan) and a moderately organized one (New Mexico). If the run game doesn’t wake up, Georgia is going to break this team.
Hot take: Mateer has to stop turning it over. Two picks against a Mountain West opponent, in a game where he was completing 76% of his throws for 12.5 yards a pop, is the difference between a comfortable win and the stress-test that actually happened. He is not going to survive four turnovers in Athens.
The defense earned this one. The offense hasn’t earned Georgia.
Season cumulative: 2-1, 75 points scored, 23 allowed. Take the record. Don’t lie about the trend. Two of the three offensive performances have been rough, and one of the two came at home against a Mountain West opponent whose ceiling was two field goals.
Next up
Oklahoma travels to Athens on 2026-09-26 to face Georgia. That’s the game the schedule was built around and the game this team was supposed to be building toward. Right now they’re building toward a checkup, not a title fight.
The falsifiable marker: if Oklahoma scores fewer than 20 points against Georgia, they lose. Not “probably lose.” Lose. And if the ground game finishes under 100 yards, they lose by three scores.
