How it happened
UTSA never trailed. McCown opened the scoring with a 36-yard strike to AJ Wilson Jr. midway through the first quarter, and the second quarter turned into a full stretch of the Vaqueros — three Roadrunner touchdowns inside the first six minutes, capped by Henderson’s 75-yard sprint that made it 28-3. Michael Petro added a 30-yard field goal in the final minute of the half; UTRGV answered with a chip-shot as the clock hit zero, and it was 31-6 at the break.
The third quarter came and went without a score — the only ugly stretch the box score hides. UTSA reasserted itself in the fourth: McCown found DJ Allen Jr. for a 62-yard catch-and-run touchdown at 10:41, and A’Marion Peterson closed the book with a 53-yard scoring run inside three minutes to go. UTRGV pushed a rushing touchdown into the last four seconds for the cosmetics.
What the numbers say
UTSA outgained UTRGV 525 to 422 and finished plus-two in turnovers. McCown’s stat line will lead the highlight package, but the box score is really a story about explosives: three UTSA touchdowns went for 49 yards or more, and Henderson (9 carries, 99 yards) averaged eleven per pop. DJ Allen Jr. finished with 116 yards on three catches. On defense, James Walley Jr. got home for a sack and Joel Rogers led the team with seven tackles.
Two numbers do not flatter the home team, though. UTSA converted just 3 of 9 third downs and finished with 11 penalties for 115 yards. UTRGV held the ball for 34:49 to the Roadrunners’ 25:11 largely because of it. Against a real Sun Belt or American opponent, that math tilts the other way.

The official GoUTSA recap framed the night as a coming-out party for the explosive plays, and it is hard to argue with three touchdowns of 49 yards or more in a season opener. McCown, freshly named to the Manning Award watch list before kickoff, gave the voters something to remember on the very first Saturday of the season.
Our take
Here is our read: the ceiling on this offense is legitimately higher than last year. When your quarterback is 22-of-27 in a season opener and your two longest touchdowns are a 75-yard run and a 62-yard hookup, that is a scheme working in concert with the personnel, not variance.
Discipline, not explosives, decides whether this team is still 1-0 in December.
Hot take: the offense will keep this pace against most of the American schedule. The concern is the other side. UTRGV still hung 422 yards and controlled the ball for nearly 35 minutes. Some of that is UTSA’s own hand — 115 penalty yards is a lot of drive extensions to give away — but the tackling in space was not sharp either. Fix that before the trip to San Marcos next weekend, or the preview’s optimism is going to look a shade premature.
Next up
Road opens Sept. 12 at Texas State. Shortest bus trip on the schedule, and the game that always plays spicier than the records suggest. If UTSA cleans up the flags and the tackling angles, they win going away. If they don’t, this becomes the game everyone in San Antonio is arguing about for a week — the way last year’s Army home finale slipped away is exactly the pattern to avoid.
