Key takeaways
- The chalk this week is loud. KC -11.5 in Miami, SF -8.5 at home, DET -6.5 at home, GB -6.5 on Thursday — the market is asking you to lay real numbers.
- Prisco's board just reshuffled. Seattle stays No. 1 with a backup QB, Cincinnati leaped to No. 4, Miami crashed to No. 32.
- Two “live dog” narratives are getting cute. Cowboys +2.5 over Baltimore and Broncos +2.5 over the Rams are on nearly every column.
- Our model is pounding one lock and one contrarian. KC at 84.8% is the highest confidence on the board; on BAL/DAL we're taking the other side of the crowd's darling upset.
- Lock your card by Wednesday night. Falcons at Packers kicks Thursday and the line has already moved twice.
Week 3 is when the season stops pretending. Two weeks in, the “we're just figuring things out” excuse is dead — the 0-2 clubs are staring down 0-3, the 2-0 clubs are trying to prove they're real, and the picks you make this Sunday are the ones you'll actually remember when the standings get printed in December.
Here's the honest read of the slate: who's rising, who's cooked, what the loudest voices in the room are saying, and where our model is willing to argue with them.
Who's hot heading into Week 3
Pete Prisco's Week 3 power rankings at CBS Sports landed this week, and the top of his board tells you exactly where the market is going to lean over the next four days.
- Seahawks (No. 1) — won on the road with backup QB Drew Lock and still didn't move off the top spot. They're a road favorite in Washington.
- Bills (No. 2) — Prisco has Josh Allen “playing at an MVP level.” They host the 0-2 Chargers as a 7-point favorite.
- 49ers (No. 3) — the biggest home favorite of the week (-8.5 vs. Arizona).
- Bengals (No. 4, up four spots) — Prisco: “The defense has been much improved, which is why they are up this high. Joe Burrow hasn't even gotten it going yet.” They're on the road at Pittsburgh.
- Chiefs (No. 5) — “Patrick Mahomes looks like Patrick Mahomes again.” They're 11.5-point road favorites in Miami and it's not even the biggest storyline in the game.
- Raiders — jumped 12 spots to No. 16 after starting 2-0. They visit New Orleans as a road favorite.
- Rams — climbed three spots to No. 8 after the offense finally showed up. They fly to Denver.
Who's fading before we get to Sunday
The other half of the ranking matters just as much when you're building a pick'em card, because the pool doesn't score you for being brave — it scores you for being right.
- Dolphins (No. 32) — winless, and Prisco has them dead last. They host the Chiefs.
- Titans (No. 31) — 0-2 under Robert Saleh. They travel to the Giants.
- Falcons (No. 30) — Michael Penix Jr. returns Thursday night at Green Bay.
- Commanders (No. 29) — Jayden Daniels' elbow injury is doing exactly what everyone feared. Marcus Mariota starts against Seattle. That's not the matchup you circled on your Week 3 card three weeks ago.
- Browns (No. 28) — small signs of life, but they still host a Panthers team the market has moved on.
- Chargers (No. 23) — 0-2 and now facing what Prisco calls a “brutal seven-game stretch,” starting in Buffalo.
- Texans (No. 24) — dropped 12 spots, 0-2, and somehow still road favorites at Indianapolis. That's the market not fully catching up.
What the experts are saying about Week 3
Here's the funny thing about a Week 3 board that looks this chalky: everyone in the industry is trying to find the one place to be different.
ESPN's expert panel is largely lining up with the favorites — the Chiefs, Bills, 49ers, Lions and Ravens are getting the majority of picks across their staff. Where the room cracks open is Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, where they're genuinely split between a road-favorite Bengals side coming off the defensive fireworks Prisco flagged, and a home-underdog Steelers team the public still likes.
Pete Prisco's picks column for Week 3 wasn't posted at the time of writing, but his power rankings tell you a lot: he's leaning into the Bengals-as-real, Dolphins-as-cooked and Commanders-as-shorthanded story lines. Expect his card to reflect that.
The consensus we've seen from other analyst boards likes three specific upsets:
- Cowboys +2.5 over Ravens — the “highest-total game of the week, live home dog” narrative. It's on every analyst's shortlist.
- Broncos +2.5 over Rams — the altitude-plus-pass-rush pitch against an offense that just found itself.
- Eagles as road favorite over Bears — this one's less an upset than a soft favorite getting hardened by Chicago's QB room. Caleb Williams and Tyson Bagent are both banged up.
When three “upset picks” are on every column in the industry, they aren't upsets anymore — they're just where the crowd went.
The DaqsPickEm model's corner
We only give away a couple of these — the full board of 16 games with confidence numbers on every one lives on the Pick Insights page, which we refresh every time the market moves. But two calls are worth putting on the table right now.
The lock: Chiefs at Dolphins
The model is pounding Kansas City on the road at Miami at 84.8% confidence — comfortably the highest number on the whole Week 3 slate. That aligns with what the market is telling you (KC is laying 11.5) and what Prisco is telling you (Mahomes looks like Mahomes; Miami is the No. 32 team on his board). The injury report cuts in KC's favor. It's a Sunday 1 p.m. ET kick, not a short week or a Monday night trap.
This is not a “buy low” spot. This is the model saying: the market is right, the number is right, don't overthink it. If you're in a survivor pool and you still have Kansas City in your locker, this is the week to play them.
The contrarian: Ravens at Cowboys
Here's where we're stepping in front of the crowd. Every column we read this morning is calling Dallas +2.5 the “live home dog” of the week. Our model sees it the other way — Baltimore at 56.7% confidence — and the reason it gives is reverse line movement. Translation: the majority of public tickets are on Dallas, but the actual line has moved toward Baltimore. That's the sharp-money fingerprint. When the money is on one side and the tickets are on the other, our model treats the money as the tell.
Is this a bang-your-fist play? No — 56.7% is a lean, not a lock. But if you're on the Cowboys +2.5 because it's the fashionable pick, be honest about why. Our model doesn't think the crowd is right.
Confidence-pool tip: If you're playing weighted picks, this is a slate that wants big numbers on KC, BUF, SF and DET — and small numbers on the toss-up games (CAR/CLE, HOU/IND, MIN/TB). Don't spend confidence on a game the model has under 55%.
Survivor pool warning: The Bills are tempting at -7 vs. an 0-2 Chargers team, but if you burn Buffalo in Week 3 you don't have them for the AFC East slate in October. Look at your remaining teams before you click.
The rest of the week's Week 3 content
If you're staking pick'em picks, the season-long context matters. Last week's Week 2 pick'em preview flagged some of the same trends — the Chargers looked shaky, the Commanders were about to have an injury problem — and both showed up. For the fantasy side of the same Sunday, this week's waiver wire has the rostered-under-40% names to grab before your leaguemates figure out what's happening in Miami and Denver. And if you're rebuilding a bench without spending FAAB, the trade-leverage piece from ITFFL earlier this week is a decent read.
Lock it in before Thursday
Falcons at Packers kicks at 8:15 p.m. ET Thursday. The line has already moved twice this week. The public is chasing three “live dog” upsets. Our model is saying: pick the chalk you're supposed to pick, and pick a fight where the crowd is wrong.
Get in there, make your calls, and if you like arguing with the market — that's literally the game.
