NFL Week 5 2026 Pick'em Preview: Experts, Model Locks, and Hot/Cold Teams

Baker Mayfield is out, the Cowboys are a touchdown-plus favorite, and the sharp money has quietly moved to Washington. Here's where to spend confidence this week.

NFL Week 5 2026 Pick'em Preview: Experts, Model Locks, and Hot/Cold Teams Pick'em

Key takeaways

  • Dallas is the Thursday lock. Cowboys are home 8-point favorites against an 0-4 Tampa Bay team starting an undrafted rookie. Our model is at 74% confidence — the single highest number on the board.
  • Sharp money is on Washington, not the Giants. The line moved toward the Commanders this week while the public kept hammering New York. That is textbook reverse line movement, and our model goes with it.
  • The Baltimore-Atlanta Sunday nighter is where the experts split. CBS likes the Falcons at home; our model (barely) stays with the Ravens, pending Lamar Jackson's ankle report.
  • Confidence pool rule. Save your low slots for the four games under three points — SF-SEA, CLE-NYJ, MIN-NO, IND-PIT. Those are coin flips with the thinnest edges.
  • Lock before Thursday 8:15 ET. One Baker Mayfield surprise, one Tyler Smith scratch, and the number moves.

You know the feeling. It is Tuesday night, your group chat is already arguing about Dallas minus eight, and someone just paste-dropped a screenshot of Jalon Daniels — undrafted, no NFL start to his name — listed as the Bucs' Thursday starter. That is Week 5 in miniature: a Thursday game that looks like a free square on the pick'em card, and a Sunday full of nervous confidence allocation after it.

Baker Mayfield dislocated his right thumb in Week 3 against Minnesota and is expected to miss at least three games per the Tampa Bay beat. The Bucs are 0-4. The Cowboys are home on short rest. The number has moved toward Dallas since open — not against it — which is as clean a signal as the week gives you. And it still won't be the pick'em question that decides your week. The question is what you do with the fourteen games after it.

Who's hot heading into Week 5

The quietly ascendant team of the week is Cleveland. Pete Prisco jumped the Browns nine spots in his latest power rankings — the biggest one-week climb in his column — and they draw a Jets team that will be banged up on both sides of the ball. If you are in a confidence pool with teaser value anywhere, this is the game to notice.

Dallas is the obvious one. Market makers set the line at Cowboys minus eight and bettors have kept laying it anyway, so the number has drifted up instead of down. That is the market telling you the chalk is not getting faded. Our model has the Cowboys at 74.3%, the single highest confidence figure on the week.

Detroit at Arizona is the sneaky-strong confidence slot. The Lions are road favorites of nearly a touchdown and the matchup profiles well for them. Our model is on Detroit at 58% — not a lock, but a legitimate thirteen or fourteen on your card.

If you were setting up a Week 4 confidence sheet last Wednesday, our Week 4 pick'em preview hit the same checklist. The gap between "obvious" and "actually chalk-locks" is where the money lives, and the hot teams this week are closer to real locks than last week's were.

Who's cold

Prisco wrote this week that the Chargers and Texans are a disaster, and the lines agree with him. Los Angeles sits as a short home favorite over Denver, and that is a polite way to say the market does not trust them. Our model actually leans Denver as the stronger side of this one — more on that in a moment.

The Buccaneers are the obvious cold entry. Four losses, a thumb, and an undrafted rookie under center is a bad combination; it is also exactly the kind of situation where garbage-time backdoor coverings happen late with Dallas sitting on a lead. If you are in a survivor pool and still alive, Dallas is the chalk pick. If you are in a confidence pool, the number is the issue, not the result.

Baltimore enters Sunday night with Lamar Jackson limited by an ankle issue. CBS Sports called that trouble and picked Atlanta at home 30-27. Our model splits the difference and takes the Ravens by a slim 52% margin — model-speak for "do not put this one in your top-eight confidence slots." If the Thursday injury report has Lamar as questionable instead of probable, flip the pick.

What the experts are saying

The CBS Sports room is lined up more than usual this week. John Breech and Pete Prisco both lean the Rams -2.5 over Buffalo in the Monday nighter — Breech citing the Bills' passing-defense issues against Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, and Davante Adams; Prisco calling for a 34-31 shootout. Both also take the Bears -3 over Green Bay, with Prisco pointing to Green Bay's rushing attack sitting dead last in several buckets. And both take the 49ers at Seattle, with Breech citing a stat that stopped us: San Francisco is 37-1 when they score 30 or more since 2021.

Breech added two more we found worth flagging: Falcons at home over the Ravens 30-27 on Sunday night (Lamar's ankle again) and Patriots over the Raiders 27-24, where New England's run game matches well against a Las Vegas defense allowing 154.7 rushing yards per game over three weeks.

ESPN's expert panel is thin on Week 5 cards as of Tuesday afternoon — several analysts had not filed yet when the picks page refreshed — but the public lean on Thursday is heavily Dallas and the sharps have not fought it. That is the market telling you the chalk is clean.

The interesting disagreement across the industry is Baltimore at Atlanta. CBS likes the Falcons at home; a lot of public money is still on Baltimore because of name value. If you want a differentiated survivor pick late in the season, the Falcons are sitting there on Sunday night.

The model's corner

Here is where we stop quoting other people's picks and look at ours. The DaqsPickEm v2-oracle model ran all fifteen games overnight. It flagged two games as high-conviction enough that we are putting them on the record — and left the rest of the full board on Pick Insights where the confidence numbers live.

The lock: Dallas Cowboys -8 (vs. Tampa Bay, Thursday)

74.3% confidence. The model's steam signal is loud: the line opened Dallas -8 and has drifted higher as the public has piled on, which usually means the money and the number are rowing in the same direction. In short-week spots with a backup quarterback on the road, that trend holds more than it misses. Lamar's ankle doesn't change this pick. Jalon Daniels making his first NFL start on prime time in Dallas does.

If you are in a straight winner pool, this is the easiest confidence slot of the week. If you are in a spread pool, it is a hold-your-nose eight-point lay — and the model still takes it. The number went up because the chalk is real, not because the public is talking themselves into it.

The sharp-money alert: Washington vs. New York Giants

57.85% confidence, and this is where it gets interesting. The line in this one opened with the Commanders as a slimmer favorite and moved toward Washington as the public kept hammering the Giants. That is textbook reverse line movement — sharps on one side, square money on the other, and the sportsbooks siding with the sharps. Our model's edge in this game isn't about talent; it is about the market signal.

In a confidence pool, this is where you pick up ground on your league. The Giants are getting a surprising amount of public love this week; a Washington pick on your card looks obvious when the game is over and looks brave on Wednesday night.

The rest of the board

We are not giving away the model's full fifteen picks. The confidence numbers on the other thirteen games — including a second reverse-line-movement call in the AFC East, a modest road-favorite call that cuts against the public, and the exact confidence spread between our Baltimore read and Breech's Atlanta read — all live on Pick Insights. Members see the whole board.

What we will say: the model disagrees with the CBS consensus in three places this week, agrees in three, and splits the other nine. That is normal variance; what matters is where it disagrees and by how much. Those are the games where your contrarian survivor pick or your late-confidence sleeper lives.

Confidence pool strategy for Week 5

Fifteen games means fifteen through one on your card. A few quick rules we keep coming back to this season:

Slot rangeCandidatesWhy
14-15 (your top locks)DAL vs. TBShort week, backup QB, hot home crowd. Easiest cell on the card.
12-13DET at ARI, JAX vs. PHIStrong favorites in matchups the market agrees on.
8-11WSH vs. NYG, HOU at TEN, DEN at LACMarket-signal games — line moves tell a clearer story than the eye test.
4-7GB vs. CHI, NE vs. LV, BAL at ATLField-goal-swing games where injury news could flip the pick.
1-3 (your least information)SF at SEA, CLE at NYJ, MIN at NO, IND at PITCoin flips. Give them the smallest consequence.

The model loves a Thursday chalk and a Sunday sharp-money favorite. Pick accordingly.

And if you have been grinding the pick'em board every week this season, you already know how the fantasy start/sit calls and waiver wire adds from last week have shifted which teams you trust in a confidence pool. The way the first month has gone for the Steelers' run defense is a reason our model isn't laying 2.5 with Pittsburgh at home against the Colts this Sunday.

Thursday lockout. Picks lock the moment Tampa Bay's offense takes the field at 8:15 ET on Prime Video. One Baker Mayfield surprise activation, one Tyler Smith scratch, and the number moves. Set your card by Thursday afternoon.

Survivor pool reminder. If you are still alive and have not burned Dallas, this is the week to spend it. Save Buffalo and Kansas City for later weeks — their best spots are coming.

Lock your Week 5 card on the pick'em board before Thursday night, check the full confidence stack on Pick Insights, and if you like calling upsets, that is literally the game.
