Tate Sandell put OU up 3-0 late in the first with a 38-yard field goal, LSU tied it at 3 early in the second, and for a while this looked like a game that would end 13-10 either way. Mateer finished 23-of-38 for 318 yards, 2 TDs and 3 INTs — a night that was two giveaways away from a five-star box score and one giveaway away from being the loss that killed a playoff resume. Sategna caught 9 for 121 and the winner. Tory Blaylock led the ground game with 11 carries for 42, which tells you the run game did nobody any favors.
The defense, though. LSU finished with 198 total yards. Nine first downs. 2-for-14 on third down. Van Buren went 14-of-25 for 96. Kendal Daniels led with seven tackles. That is a playoff defense showing up in a game that begged for one.

Here's our read: this is the exact kind of game a playoff team wins. Ugly, three interceptions by your quarterback, an offense that never really cooked, and you still walk out 17-13 because your defense held an SEC opponent to 198 yards and 9 first downs. That's not a fluke. That's a defense.
Hot take: Isaiah Sategna III is the WR1 in this offense right now, and if Mateer stops feeding the other team the ball in December, the Sooners are a nightmare draw in the bracket. A 393-yard, 3-INT game against a decent SEC defense is a rounding error away from a shootout.
