Key takeaways
- Only one true lock. The Chargers at 10.5 over Arizona is the only double-digit line on the entire board.
- Nine coin-flip games. More than half the slate is inside a field goal — the tightest Week 1 in years.
- ESPN & the CBS model agree on Jax and Philly. Both are the industry darlings to cover as home favorites.
- Our model is pounding one road dog. Reverse line movement flagged a sharp play the public has not caught yet.
- The full model board lives on Pick Insights. We're showing two teasers here — there are sixteen calls waiting for you.
It's Week 1. Everyone's 0-0, every roster is going to the Super Bowl, and the guy in your league who traded away his first-rounder is somehow bragging again. The board is a coin-flip circus. Sixteen games, one obvious favorite, and a whole lot of “wait, who's their starter?”
We can't fix your uncle's takes. We can, however, tell you exactly where the market, the national experts, and our own AI model are lining up — and where they aren't. Because in Week 1, the difference between 12-4 and 8-8 in your pick'em pool is usually about four coin flips going the right way.
What the Week 1 board actually looks like
This is a weird one. Nine of the sixteen games have spreads of three points or less. Only one team on the entire slate is favored by more than a touchdown. Two games open the season on weeknights before Sunday even shows up — the Seahawks host New England on Wednesday for a banner-raising night at Lumen, and the Rams host the 49ers in Melbourne, Australia on Thursday. You read that right. Melbourne.
| Marquee window | Game | Spread | Vibe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wed opener | NE @ SEA | SEA -3.5 | Banner raising, loud house, tight line |
| Thu (Melbourne) | SF @ LAR | LAR -3.5 | NFC West opener on another continent |
| Sunday 1 PM ET | BAL @ IND | BAL -3.5 | Road-favorite value spot |
| Sunday 4:25 PM ET | ARI @ LAC | LAC -10.5 | The only double-digit line all week |
| SNF | DAL @ NYG | DAL -2.5 | Divisional pick'em masquerading as a spread |
| MNF | DEN @ KC | KC -2.5 | Watch the Mahomes injury reports all weekend |
What ESPN's experts are saying
ESPN's expert board is leaning toward two things: home favorites, and the Chargers. That is not a spicy take — that is what the market is doing too — but the interesting piece is where the panel agrees. There's near-unanimity on Seattle at home in the opener (the Lumen banner-raising night narrative is doing real work), and Jacksonville catching Cleveland at home is the most-cited “lock” among their panel of writers.
The disagreements are all on the coin-flip games, which is exactly where you'd expect them. Bills at Texans has experts split roughly down the middle. Packers at Vikings is a divisional pick'em where nobody wants to plant a flag. And Dallas at Giants is generating the most divided panel of the week — that game is where you'll get separation from the crowd in a big pool.
What the CBS Sports model says
CBS Sports runs a 10,000-simulation model for every game, and this week it's built around two conviction plays: Jacksonville -7.5 over Cleveland (the Jags led the NFL in ATS record last year and were a wagon at home) and Philadelphia -5.5 over Washington (Jalen Hurts is 8-1 in his last nine against the Commanders, and Washington is breaking in a new 3-4 defense with a chunk of new starters).
“Nine games inside a field goal is not a slate for hero-ball. It's a slate for finding one edge and pressing it.”
The prediction-market crowd — the Kalshi/Polymarket set that occasionally beats the sportsbooks on major mispricings — is flagging Indianapolis +3.5 as its single biggest Week 1 edge, with the Colts' implied home win probability running noticeably above what the spread suggests. Read that as: sharp corners of the market think the Ravens' number is a touch inflated. If you're playing a spread pool, that's a real callout.
Tip: In Week 1, you don't have game film. You have market signals, injury reports, and preseason usage. That is a smaller edge than mid-season — so bet size accordingly, and treat “consensus” picks like Chargers-Cardinals as the confidence-point anchor of your ballot, not as a betting slip.
Our model's corner: the lock and the road dog
Now the fun part. Our v2-oracle model ran all sixteen games this morning, and there's one call it is more confident on than anything else, plus one contrarian read the national panel is going to miss. We're not going to spoil the whole board here — that lives on Pick Insights — but two teasers.
The lock: Chargers -10.5 vs. Arizona
This is the model's highest-conviction call of the week. LAC clocks in at 73.3% confidence straight up, which is a mile above anything else on the board. The market agrees — this is the only double-digit line of Week 1 — but the model's read is that the number is fair, not inflated. That combination (highest conviction, everyone else lining up on the same side) is what you want in a Week 1 survivor pool: you don't want to be creative on Week 1, you want to advance.
The one caveat: if you're in a really deep survivor pool, be aware that everyone is going to be on the Chargers, which spikes your correlated-loss exposure. If the Cardinals somehow pull it off, your pool halves in a single game. That's a game-theory question, not a football question — and we get into it in the survivor pool strategy guide.
The contrarian: Texans as home dogs to Buffalo
Here's the one we're most excited about. The Bills-Texans line has moved toward Houston despite public money piling on Buffalo — that's reverse line movement, and it is one of the cleaner sharp-money signals you get in the pre-Week-1 window. Our model has Houston at 53.8% confidence to win outright. That is not a lock. It is a leverage call: everybody in your pool is taking Buffalo, and if the sharp read is correct, you just picked up a free win on your rivals.
Trap watch: Do not chase Cleveland at Jacksonville. Both the CBS model and the ESPN panel are on the Jags, our model has JAX at 68.4%, and the “live dog” argument on Cleveland is being made mostly by people who like being different for its own sake. Being different in Week 1 is a strategy. Being different on the wrong side is how you go 0-2 and start panic-checking your bench.
There's also a third read worth knowing about that we're keeping for the subscribers — a road favorite the model actually likes more than the market does, backed by prediction-market data that flags it as one of the biggest Week 1 mispricings on the board. The full model card — every game, every confidence rating, every reason — is on Pick Insights right now.
A little context you already have but might have forgotten
Preseason told us a few things worth carrying into Week 1. Baltimore looked crisp in their preseason work against Philadelphia — the recap is here — which is part of why our model is comfortable laying the road number in Indianapolis. And if you're still filling out the back of your fantasy roster tonight, the post-preseason sleepers list is more useful than any Week 1 hot take.
The play
Anchor your ballot on the Chargers. Take Seattle and Philadelphia at home. Consider Houston as your contrarian differentiator. Do NOT get cute in Cleveland-Jacksonville. And leave yourself a way out of the Cowboys-Giants pick because that game is going to swing on one Dak turnover and you already know it.
The board opens Wednesday. You've got until then to make sixteen decisions that might feel small in September and enormous in December. If you like calling upsets and getting rewarded for being early to a sharp read, that's literally the game.
