NFL Week 8 2026 Pick’em Preview: Hot, Cold, and the Dogs We’re Barking About

Who’s streaking into Week 8, who’s limping, what Prisco and ESPN’s panel are saying — and the two picks our model is loudest on before Thursday night.

NFL Week 8 2026 Pick’em Preview: Hot, Cold, and the Dogs We’re Barking About Pick'em

Key takeaways

  • Vikings own the top spot. Minnesota is the last unbeaten and travels to Detroit in the game of the week — a true divisional title fight in Week 8.
  • Chiefs and 49ers are cold. Both powerhouses lost last week; Kansas City is a road dog in Denver, which hasn’t happened in a long time.
  • Prisco is riding Carolina as his upset special over Green Bay in the TNF opener. He also has Buffalo over Baltimore and Minnesota handling Detroit on the road.
  • Our model’s loudest call is a road dog you probably weren’t going to touch — and the lock of the week sits at nearly 78% confidence.
  • Four teams on bye: Saints, Giants, 49ers, Texans. If you have any of them in survivor, you’re stuck picking blind this week.

Welcome back. We’re eight weeks in, the halftime of the season, and the shape of 2026 is finally hardening into something you can lean on. Minnesota is the last unbeaten. The Chiefs just lost in Seattle. The Packers look mortal at home. Half the Super Bowl favorites from August are now the teams you’re fading in confidence pools.

Below: who’s hot, who’s cold, what the experts you’ve heard of are saying, and the two games our model is pounding the table on. Lock your picks before Thursday night — the Panthers-Packers opener is a live upset.

Who’s hot, who’s cold coming into Week 8

Hot: Minnesota Vikings are the only team without a loss, and Prisco put them atop his Week 8 power rankings this week. Buffalo is 4-0 ATS when giving up 30+ points this season — a weird stat that keeps paying off. Seattle just ended Kansas City’s unbeaten run. Jacksonville has quietly become one of the better bets as a big home favorite.

Cold: Kansas City — now a road underdog, which is a sentence we didn’t think we’d write in October. San Francisco is on bye after their loss, giving the rest of the NFC a week to pass them. Green Bay has looked wobbly at Lambeau and is only laying 3.5 to a 1-5 Panthers team. Los Angeles Chargers have become the league’s coldest offense — the sportsbook model that CBS tracks is comparing them to a team on a nine-game losing streak with twice as many turnovers as touchdowns.

If you’re still picking games the way you did in Week 1, you’re already behind. The teams that looked like locks in August are the dogs this week.

Byes trap: Saints, Giants, 49ers, Texans. If any of those are in your survivor stable, you’re eating a pick this week whether you want to or not.

What the experts are saying this week

Pete Prisco (CBS) is calling for a Thursday night shocker — Panthers over Packers as his upset special. He’s on Bills over Ravens at home, and he’s picking the Vikings on the road in Detroit, going against the home chalk in the game of the week. That last one has swagger: Minnesota as a 3.5-point dog, Prisco trusting Brian Flores’s defense to travel.

John Breech (CBS) is a lot more aggressive with upset picks this week. He has the Browns winning in Pittsburgh outright — a sweep of a historic blood rivalry — and he’s hammering the two biggest road dogs on the board: Patriots over Dolphins 31-17 and Commanders over Eagles 23-16 on Sunday night. He also likes Vikings 19-16 on the road, so there’s a CBS consensus brewing in Detroit.

ESPN’s expert panel — Clay, Graziano, Solak, Bowen and the rest — is leaning chalk this week. The FPI model gives Cincinnati an 87% win probability against Tennessee, which is the single most confident projection on the board. There are eight games with spreads of 3.5 or less, so the panel is split everywhere except that Bengals game and the two big home favorites (Jacksonville, Dallas).

The consensus points you can build a pool entry on:

GameConsensusInteresting Disagreement
TEN at CINBengals (big)Prisco’s upset history — worth watching
IND at JAXJaguars (big)None — this is the cleanest confidence lock
BAL at BUFBillsLamar’s status; score projections swing by 7 points
MIN at DETSplitPrisco + Breech on the Vikings road dog
NE at MIADolphins (chalk)Breech going HARD the other way
PHI at WSHEagles (chalk)Breech picking the Commanders outright
CAR at GBPackersPrisco’s upset special on Carolina

Translation for pick’em: the games the experts split on — Lions-Vikings, Patriots-Dolphins, Eagles-Commanders — are where confidence points die. The games they agree on — Cincinnati, Jacksonville — are where you load up at the top of your sheet.

Our model’s corner

Now the fun part. Our in-house model (v2 Oracle) priced all 14 games this week, and two picks jumped off the board. We’re not going to show you the full slate here — the complete board lives on Pick Insights — but these are the two the model is loudest on.

The lock: Jaguars over Colts (−8.5)

The highest-confidence pick on our entire board this week sits at 77.8%, and it’s Jacksonville at home laying 8.5 to Indianapolis. The market says 8.5. Our model says that number is light — the injury differential favors Jacksonville, the home advantage is real, and the Colts have no business being within a touchdown here. In confidence pools, this is where your maximum points go. In survivor, if you haven’t burned the Jags yet, there’s your Week 8.

The upset we’re pounding: Patriots at Dolphins (+7)

This one is going to make you nervous. Miami is laying 7 at home. Our model is calling the Patriots to cover and win outright at 68.8% confidence — one of the loudest contrarian signals we’ve had all season. The reasoning: reverse line movement. The sharps have been hammering New England all week even as the public pours in on Miami. When the line moves against the money, you follow the money. Breech agrees — he has it Patriots 31-17.

Pool tip: If you’re in a tiebreaker-driven pool and you need differentiation, picking the Patriots outright is where you buy equity. Most of your league will be on Miami.

Those are the two we’ll put on the record. But there are a handful of other quiet contrarian calls on our board this week — including one road dog in a prime-time slot and a home dog nobody is talking about — and all of them, with the full confidence scores and reasoning, are live on Pick Insights.

Survivor and confidence strategy

Survivor pool strategy for Week 8: Jacksonville is the cleanest — big home favorite, no bye-week complications, and a lot of pools haven’t touched them yet because they got burned early in the year. Buffalo at home is live too if you’ve already spent the Jags. Save Cincinnati for a nervier week when the board is thinner — a 10.5-point favorite with an 87% FPI win probability is survivor gold you don’t want to waste in Week 8.

Confidence pool strategy: Top three on your sheet are Jacksonville, Cincinnati, Dallas. The games you deliberately rank low — put 1 or 2 points on — are the Minnesota-Detroit, Panthers-Packers, and Rams-Chargers slots. If you’re wrong on a one-point pick, you lose one point. If you’re wrong on a 14-point pick in a coin flip, your week’s over.

If you want more context on how we’ve been reading this season, our Week 7 preview covers the trends that are still live, and the Week 5 preview is where we first flagged that the preseason Super Bowl favorites were going to be fade candidates — a call that has aged pretty well so far. Those pieces plus the Week 4 preview show the thread we’ve been pulling on all year.

Bottom line for Week 8

Lock Jacksonville and Cincinnati at the top. Make a real decision on Vikings-Lions — don’t just default to the home team. Decide if you’re brave enough to touch the Patriots road upset. And if you’re in a Thursday-night pool, Carolina is live in a way the market hasn’t fully priced.

Our full model board — every game, every confidence percentage, every bit of reasoning — is sitting on Pick Insights. The experts are split on half this slate. We’re not. Go see which side of the fence we’re on, then make the call that fits your pool. And if you like calling upsets, that’s literally the game.

Frequently asked questions

When do Week 8 NFL picks lock?
The Thursday night opener (Panthers at Packers) kicks at 8:15 PM ET on 10/30, so TNF picks lock then. Sunday picks lock at the 1 PM ET window. Lock everything by Thursday afternoon if you’re the forgetful type.
Who is the biggest Week 8 favorite in the NFL?
Cincinnati at −10.5 against Tennessee. ESPN’s FPI gives the Bengals an 87% win probability, and it’s the only double-digit spread on the board. Confidence pools, start here.
Is Patriots at Dolphins a trap in Week 8?
Miami is laying 7 at home, but the Patriots have been the more complete team for a month and the sharps have hammered this one. CBS’s John Breech has New England winning outright 31-17. Our model agrees — it’s one of our two headline calls this week.
Who should I pick in a survivor pool for Week 8?
Jacksonville at home against Indianapolis is the cleanest double-digit favorite that most pools haven’t burned yet. Buffalo at home against Baltimore is also live if you still have the Bills. Save Cincinnati for a nervier week.
